WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team fell in non-conference action on the road at crosstown foe University of Hartford (Hartford), 12-4, after five innings Thursday afternoon at the Hartford Softball Field in West Hartford, Conn. With the results, the Blue Jays moved to 5-8 on the year, while the Hawks improved to 8-7 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- USJ wasted little time taking the lead, as freshman Lorynes Suriel (Lynn, Mass.) ripped a two-RBI single to the right center gap, plating sophomore Jennifer Antonowicz (Wolcott, Conn.) and junior Kaitlyn Ouellete (Wolcott, Conn.) and establishing a 2-0 edge.
- In the next at-bat, Suriel would steal second before sophomore catcher Sydney Robison (Clinton, Conn.) slashed an RBI double to right-center, increasing the lead to 3-0 after the bottom of the first.
- Hartford immediately answered, scoring six runs in the bottom of the frame to hold a 6-3 edge after the first inning.
- The Hawks increased the edge in the bottom of the second, tacking on two runs to hold an 8-3 advantage.
- Junior catcher Allison Conger (Plainfield, Conn.) pulled a run back for USJ in the top of the third, slashing a single to center field to score freshman pinch runner Sophia Onofrio (Naugatuck, Conn.) and cut the deficit to 8-4.
- However, Hartford answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, while keeping USJ off the scoreboard to secure the victory via the run rule, 12-4, after five innings.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Robison paced the team with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate.
- Antonowicz, Ouellette and Suriel all recorded a stolen base.
- Sophomore Analise Escarraman (Windham, Conn.) got the start inside the circle, picking up the loss (0-4) after allowing six runs off six hits in one inning of work.
- Freshman Brenna Lyver (Enfield, Conn.) made her collegiate debut, throwing 2.2 innings of relief, surrendering six runs off six hits while tossing one strikeout.
