Softball Splits Home Doubleheader Against Bay Path Saturday Afternoon

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team opened its 2025 home slate by splitting a non-conference doubleheader against Bay Path University (Bay Path) Saturday afternoon at the USJ Softball Field in West Hartford, Conn. The Blue Jays took the victory in game one, 12-0, after five innings, while the Wildcats bounced back to win game two, 4-2. With the results, USJ moved to 5-7 on the young season, while the Wildcats moved to 5-10 on the year.

GAME ONE: USJ 12, Bay Path 0 (5 innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • USJ grabbed an early edge as junior outfielder Kaitlyn Ouellette (Wolcott, Conn.) slashed a triple down the right field line, plating junior infielder Emma Carpenter (Brooklyn, Conn.) and senior shortstop Jenna Zup (Berlin, Conn.) to establish a 2-0 USJ lead after the first.
  • The Blue Jays carried the redhot start into the second, as Carpenter ripped an RBI single, increasing the lead to 2-0.
  • In the very next at-bat, sophomore infielder Jennifer Antonowicz (Wolcott, Conn.) would notch a two-RBI triple to right, before senior pitcher Alyssa Roberts (Naugatuck, Conn.) grounded out but saw Antonowicz score, increasing the advantage to 6-0.
  • Sophomore outfielder Analise Escarraman (Windham, Conn.) continued the run parade, notching an RBI single late in the inning, while senior first baseman Alex Silver (Vernon, Conn.) notched an RBI double, rounding out the big inning as the Blue Jays held a 8-0 edge through two innings.
  • USJ tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third, as Zup scored via a Bay Path error, while Roberts recorded her second RBI of the day, increasing the lead to 10-0.
  • Zup continued her strong day at the plate in the bottom of the fourth, slashing an RBI triple to the right center gap, before Carpenter singled to left, scoring Zup and extending the lead to 12-0.
  • ROberts would continue to shut down the Wildcats at the plate, as the Blue Jays secured the win via the run-rule, 12-0, after five innings.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Ouellette paced the team with a perfect 3-for-3 outing at the plate, recording two RBI.
  • Zup, Carpenter, Antonowicz, Escarraman, and junior outfielder Avianna Ibrahim (Colchester, Conn.) all posted multi-hit games.
  • Carpenter, Anotnowicz and Roberts joined Ouellette with two RBI.
  • Antonowicz, Ouellette and Ibrahim all stole bases.
  • Roberts picked up the complete-game victory (2-2) after allowing five hits and picking up her first shutout of the season.

GAME TWO: Bay Path 4, USJ 2

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Wildcats took an early lead, grabbing a 1-0 edge after the opening inning.
  • Bay Path continued to keep control of the contest, tacking on three runs in the top of the fifth, while the Bay Path pitched kept a perfect game bid alive entering the bottom of the seventh with a 4-0 edge.
  • USJ would begin to mount a comeback in the bottom of the frame, as Zup lead off with a walk, before advancing to third during the next at-bat. Then Anotonowicz would slash an RBI triple to right field, plating Zup and closing the deficit to 4-1.
  • Roberts would continued the hot start, singling to center field, scoring Antonowicz and cutting the gap to 4-2.
  • The Blue Jays then loaded the bases, but the Wildcats would not surrender another run, holding on for the victory, 2-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Four different Blue Jays notched hits.
  • Zup stole the lone base.
  • Escarraman got the start inside the circle, picking up the loss (0-3) after allowing four runs off nine hits while tossing two strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.
  • Ouellette threw the remaining 2.1 innings in relief, giving up only two hits while notching one strikeout.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays make the quick trip down Albany Avenue for a single game against the University of Hartford on Thursday, March 27. First pitch against the Hawks at the Hartford Softball Field in West Hartford, Conn., is slated for 3:30 p.m.
