Softball Falls on the Road at JWU Saturday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team dropped a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) South Division doubleheader at Johnson & Wales University (JWU), Saturday afternoon at the Scots Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex in Providence, R.I. JWU took the opening game 9-0 after five innings, before completing the sweep with a 12-4 win after five frames in game two. With the results, the Blue Jays move to 9-15 on the year and 1-3 in GNAC play, while the Wildcats move to 12-12 overall and 6-0 in the conference.

 
GAME ONE | JWU 9, USJ 0 (5 INNINGS)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • JWU grabbed an early lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first to take the advantage.
  • The Wildcats added one run in the bottom of the third, before tacking on five more in the bottom of the fourth.
  • THe Blue Jays continued to be held at the plate, as JWU took the opening game, 9-0, after five innings.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Sophomore outfielder Madelyn Ellis (Newington, Conn.) recorded the lone hit in the game for USJ.
  • Junior pitcher Alyssa Roberts (Naugatuck, Conn.) got the start in game one, picking up the loss (3-6) after allowing nine runs, eight off which were earned, off seven hits and throwing four strikeouts across 4.0 innings.

GAME TWO | JWU 12, USJ 4 (5 INNINGS)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a scoreless first inning, the Wildcats grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
  • The Blue Jays answered back in the top of the third, as sophomore infielder Emma Carpenter (Brooklyn, Conn.) beat out a potential double-play, allowing sophomore catcher Allison Conger (Plainfield, Conn.) to cross home and tie the game at 1-1.
  • However, JWU responded with four runs in the bottom half of the frame, before tacking on six more runs in the bottom of the fourth, retaking the lead, 11-1.
  • USJ began to mount a comeback in the top of the fifth, as senior Grace DiMinno (Plainville, Conn.) recorded a walk while freshman Analise Escarraman (Windham, Conn.) notched a double, putting runners on second and third.
  • Pinch hitters continued to prove successful for USJ, as sophomore Devan Fox (Granville, Mass.) stepped up to bat, launching a two-RBI double to center, cutting the gap to 11-3.
  • Junior Elaina Previty (Pawcatuck, Conn.) then ripped a single to the right center gap, scoring Fox and closing the gap to 11-4.
  • The Wildcats though would score the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth, taking game two via the run-rule, 12-4.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Fox paced the team with two RBI.
  • Sophomore Paige Fekete (Watertown, Conn.) got the start in game two, picking up the loss (4-5) after allowing eight runs off 10 hits, and throwing two strikeouts across 3.0 innings.
  • Classmate Kaitlyn Ouellette (Wolcott, Conn.) threw 1.1 innings in relief, allowing four runs, three of which were earned, off five hits.

UP NEXT
The Blue Jays continue GNAC play on Sunday, April 14, for a doubleheader at home against Rivier University. First pitch of game one against the raiders is slated for noon on the USJ Softball Field in West Hartford, Conn.
