Softball Suffers Doubleheader Defeat To WestConn Thursday
DANBURY, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team was swept Thursday in doubleheader action against Western Connecticut State University (WCSU), dropping games one and two by a final score of 4-2, in a non-conference doubleheader on Westside Field.
GAME ONE
Score: Saint Joseph 2, WestConn 4
Records: USJ 11-13, WCSU 11-14
Location: Westside Field | Danbury, Conn.
KEY MOMENTS
- Senior Riley Mulligan (Lincoln, R.I.) was the run provider for USJ smacking a two-run homer to left field, her fourth of 2022. Mulligan has four of the Blue Jays 10 longballs this season. While it gave the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead at the time, the lead was short lived as WestConn added a run in the bottom half to tie the game. Seven different batters recorded a hit for the hosts (five doubles), who scored a run in each of the first four innings to keep the pressure on. USJ struggled at the plate for the most part as its only hit of the ballgame was the Mulligan home run. USJ looked to change that in the seventh as junior Liliana Stoddard (Waterford, Conn.) opened the frame with a single. Two batters later USJ had the go-ahead run at the plate, but back-to-back strikeouts ended game one.
IN THE CIRCLE
USJ – Sophomore Adriana Quealy (East Hartford, Conn.) took the loss (5-3), allowing four runs (3 ER) on 10 hits in six innings pitched.
WCSU – Freshman Olivia Bordenaro (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) secured the win and is now 4-1 overall. She allowed two hits, two runs and struck out a game-high 11 in the victory.
GAME TWO
Score: Saint Joseph 2, WestConn 4
Records: USJ 11-14, WCSU 12-14
Location: Westside Field | Danbury, Conn.
KEY MOMENTS
- Senior captain Frankie Ferrante (Southington, Conn.) was 2-for-4 in game two with an RBI double and a run. Stoddard also provided offense for the visitors hitting 2-for-3. USJ had just six hits in total though and five errors, as WCSU scored their four runs across three different innings, leading the entire way. The top of the order was the story as the first two in the order for WCSU combined for a 4-for-7 outing with three of the four runs scored. Senior Jillian Komornik (Shelton, Conn.) had an RBI triple in the fourth to make it 4-0. USJ tallied runs in the fifth and seventh respectively, but could not get the tying run across home plate.
IN THE CIRCLE
USJ – Freshman Amanda Savinelli (New Haven, Conn.) was dealt the loss (4-10) despite allowing 0 ER (four runs in total). She gave up seven hits and struck out four in six innings of play.
WCSU – Junior Hailey Golembiewski (Columbia, Conn.) was credited with the win (5-8) in a four-hit, one-run performance with 13 strikeouts, the most of any pitcher on the day. Freshman Sarah Milyko (Goshen, N.Y.) picked up the save in an inning of relief.
COACH QUOTE [Jim McKinnon] "We played two tough games against a good opponent. Once again our pitchers Amanda Savinelli and Adriana Quealy pitched well, and Riley Mulligan and Frankie Ferrante continued to hit with power, and our defense for the most part was good. We just have to string together some hits and then deliver some timely ones for us to improve. We are close now."
