Softball Swept By Falcons In GNAC Doubleheader

NEW HAVEN, Conn.  The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team suffered its first doubleheader sweep of the season to the Falcons of Albertus Magnus College (AMC), dropping game one 7-0, before falling 6-1 in game two, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Shea Softball Complex.

GAME ONE

Score: Albertus Magnus 7, Saint Joseph 0
Records: AMC 17-6, (3-0 GNAC), USJ 11-7 (2-3 GNAC)
Location: Shea Softball Complex | New Haven, Conn.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Game one was dominated by the Falcons who scored two runs each in the second, fifth and sixth innings respectively. Junior Janelle Franklin (Middletown, Conn.) was 4-for-4 on the game and drove in a run in the second on a single to center. She also scored a run in the fifth. Four Falcons in total had a multi-hit game.
  • The Blue Jays were led by sophomore Adriana Quealy (East Hartford, Conn.), who was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game, including a double and two singles. USJ left nine on base overall.

IN THE CIRCLE

AMC – Freshman Skylar Arent (New Fairfield, Conn.) picked up the win (7-2) in a six-hit shutout. She fanned seven overall with two walks.

USJ – Freshman Amanda Savinelli (New Haven, Conn.) was dealt the loss (4-6), allowing seven runs (4 ER) on 11 hits in five innings of work. Quealy added two innings of scoreless softball, allowing four hits and one walk (also had one strikeout).

GAME TWO
Score: Albertus Magnus 6, Saint Joseph 1
Records: AMC 18-6, (4-0 GNAC), USJ 11-8 (2-4 GNAC)
Location: Shea Softball Complex | New Haven, Conn.

KEY MOMENTS

  • In game two, the Falcons jumped on the home team with four first-inning runs, highlighted by a rocket double from senior Jess Stettinger (East Haven, Conn.). AMC appeared to be well in control in this one.
  • Senior captain Frankie Ferrante (Southington, Conn.) scored the Blue Jays first run of the contest on a single to left field from junior Liliana Stoddard (Waterford, Conn.). Ferrante finished 2-for-3 in game two with a run scored. 4-1 AMC. That score would hold until the fourth when Albertus added a fifth run.
  • Ferrante led off the sixth with a single to center, followed by a single through the left side by freshman Brianna Catalani (Watertown, Conn.), setting up runners on first and second with nobody out. USJ's best chance to make a dent came to a halt though, as Stoddard grounded into a double play, and a fly out followed. AMC closed out the seventh in the circle to secure the sweep.

IN THE CIRCLE

AMC – Senior Erin Dighello (Wallingford, Conn.) picked up the win (10-3) allowing just one run on seven hits, striking out three. Freshman Ema Signore (Guilford, Conn.), finished the game off with a clean seventh inning.

USJ – Quealy took her first loss of the season (5-1), allowing five earned runs on 10 hits in four innings of work. Savinelli went three innings in relief, allowing just three hits and a run.

COACH QUOTE [Jim McKinnon] "We didn't play our best ball today offensively. You can't expect to win scoring one run in two games. We need to get people on base early in the inning which puts pressure on their defense and pitchers. Good pitching by Amanda Savinelli and Adriana Quealy today— they are mentally tough players who work hard. We will find a way to score more runs soon. I have faith in our players."

UP NEXT
The Blue Jays will waste no time getting back on the field, as they head to Emmanuel College for another GNAC doubleheader. The action kicks off at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. respectively at the Saints.
