NEW LONDON, Conn.— The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team could not overcome two second-inning explosions from Coast Guard Academy (CGA), who scored 15 of their 21 runs in the second inning, sweeping a doubleheader on Nitchman Field Tuesday.
The Bears (18-14) have won five of their last seven, while the Blue Jays (17-15) have dropped their last three.
GAME 1
In game one, junior first baseman Carly Hattman (Egg Harbor, N.J.) led the charge behind her 100th career hit, as the Bears put up a five-run second inning, and never looked back, beating the Blue Jays 7-4.
Hattman finished 2-for-3 with two singles and an RBI. Junior second baseman Courtney McKenna (Sparta, N.J) finished 1-for-2 with an RBI single. Freshman second baseman Ashlee White (Bristol, Conn.) had a team high two RBI for the Blue Jays.
Junior pitcher Julia Ferris (Falls Church, Va.) picked up the win (10-5), allowing four runs (0 ER) on six hits in seven innings. Junior pitcher Amaria Sharon (Tolland, Conn.) took the loss (7-4), allowing seven runs on eight hits in six innings.
The five-run second inning gave the Bears a 5-0 lead. USJ tacked on three unanswered runs heading into the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-4, but CGA answered with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away for good.
GAME 2
In game two, the Bears poured it on with 10 runs in the second inning, winning 14-3 in five innings to complete the sweep.
Freshman designated player Maggie Perez (Granada Hills, Calif.) led the way, hitting 2-for-4 with four RBI for CGA. Eight different players drove in at least one run for the Bears. White brought it for the Blue Jays once again, leading the way with two RBI (2-3).
Sophomore pitcher Sydney Arendt (Mainstee, Mich.) got the win (8-9) allowed three runs (2 ER) on 10 hits in five innings. Sophomore pitcher Alessandra Milardo (Plantsville, Conn.) took the loss (3-6), allowing six runs (5 ER) on five hits in an inning and a third.
The Bears broke a 1-1 tie with 10 runs in the second on six hits. Two innings later, Perez cleared the bases with a three-RBI double. The hard hitting offense had no limits on the field Tuesday, outscoring the Blue Jays 21-7.

USJ will return to GNAC action in another doubleheader on Thursday, April 18, at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. against Albertus Magnus (CT). Coast Guard will head to Wheaton (MA) on Friday, April 19 at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
