NEW LONDON, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph Blue Jays' softball team picked up 10-0 and 3-0 victories over the Mitchell College Mariners on the road Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Field. With the wins, the Blue Jays improve to 12-8 overall on the season while the Mariners slip to 8-12. USJ will be back in action tomorrow at home in a key GNAC matchup as they host the Norwich University Cadets on the USJ Softball Field in a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Joseph held the Mariners to only five hits on the entire day. Sophomore Amaria Sharon (Tolland, Conn.) tossed a one-hitter in the opener and struck out 11, and in the nightcap, freshman hurler Alessandra Milardo (Plantsville, Conn.) scattered four hits and fanned seven to pick up the shutout.
Game 1 – USJ 10, Mitchell 0
Mitchell's lone hit off Sharon came from Italia Krick (Griswold, Conn.) in the first inning. An error by the Blue Jays gave the Mariners two runners on with only one out, but Sharon escaped trouble by retiring the next two batters to keep the game scoreless.
The Blue Jays opened the scoring with three runs in the third inning. Sophomore Taylor Marino (Middlefield, Conn.) and junior Isabella Russo (Southington, Conn.) each contributed RBI singles while the final run scored on a fielder's choice that was put into play by freshman Paola Bronner (New Britain, Conn.).
That would be all the support Sharon needed, as she allowed only one baserunner after the first inning and retired the final 13 batters she faced. The shutout victory improves her record to 5-6 for the season.
Six players finished with a pair of hits to lead the USJ offense. Sharon, Russo and junior Cinthia Vega (Waterbury, Conn.) each doubled in the contest and combined for four RBI.
Game 2 – Saint Joseph 3, Mitchell 0
Hits were hard to come by in the second game as Milardo dueled with Mitchell starter Shyla Phillips-Krick (Griswold, Conn.). The game remained scoreless until the fifth when the Blue Jays struck for three runs. Junior Jenai Davis (Hartford, Conn.) led off with a single and later scored on a fielder's choice by freshman Emily Scarfo (Meriden, Conn.) to put Saint Joseph up 1-0. Bronner followed with an RBI single to score Scarfo and eventually scored the final run on a passed ball.
Milardo made the margin stand, stranding a runner in scoring position in the sixth before flirting with trouble again in the seventh. Taylor Duchesneau (Killingly, Conn.) and Danielle Autieri (North Salem, N.Y.) each singled to bring the tying run to the plate with only one out. However, Milardo induced a ground ball and then recorded her seventh strikeout to end the game, improving her record to 7-2 on the season.
Phillips-Krick struck out five and allowed two earned runs on five hits in the circle for the Mariners.

The USJ softball team returns to action at home with a GNAC doubleheader against Norwich University on Thursday, April 12 at 3:00 p.m. Mitchell will next play at Lesley University on Saturday, April 14 with first pitch slated for 5:00 p.m.
