Men's Tennis Drops Spring Season Opener at Wheaton on Saturday

NORTON, Mass. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's tennis team dropped its 2023 spring season opener on the road, 8-1, to Wheaton College (Mass.) Saturday afternoon at Beard Field House on the campus of Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. With the setback, the Blue Jays slip to 2-3 overall in their inaugural season, while Wheaton improves to 3-2 with the triumph. Wheaton swept doubles play and won five-of-six singles, en route to the victory.

Wheaton's senior Ethan Na (Simsbury, Conn.) dropped just four games for the entire day between doubles and singles action for the Lyons. Na teamed with junior Eli Hanlon (Branford, Conn.) for an 8-2 win at second doubles over the USJ freshman tandem of Patrick Gavrylchuk (Middletown, Conn.) and Marko Karpyuk (Wetherfield, Conn.). Na made quick work of Karpyuk in singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at number two singles for his third straight singles win. Hanlon was also victorious in singles action for Wheaton with a 7-5, 6-3 win at third singles over Saint Joseph freshman Ryan Boucher (Bedford, N.H.).

Senior Josh Anschuetz (West Bloomfield, Mich.) lost just one game in each of his frames at number one singles to freshman Noah Rivera (Yonkers, N.Y.) to come away with a 6-1, 6-1 win and secure the fifth and deciding point for the Lyons. Anschuetz paired with senior Jack Luyrink (Paxton, Mass.) for an 8-4 victory at first doubles over the Blue Jays' combo of Boucher and Rivera. Luyrink picked up a singles win of his own at the four spot with a three-set positive result. Luyrink took the first set over USJ sophomore Jonathan Huot (South Windsor, Conn.) 6-4, before Huot evened the match with a 6-1 effort in the middle frame. Luyrink outlasted his foe in the third set with a 10-7 tie-break victory.

Senior Gabriel Fellows (Middletown, R.I.) paired with Wheaton junior Ahad Javed (Irving, Texas) to gain a hard-fought 8-7 (7-4) decision over Huot and junior Tyler Hussey (Rocky Hill, Conn.) at third doubles. Gavrylchuk put the Blue Jays on the board with a straight set 6-2, 7-5 win at number five singles over Fellows to make it 7-1, before Javed hung on for a 6-2, 7-5 victory for the Lyons over Hussey at sixth singles to close out the match.

The inaugural 2022-23 season for the Blue Jays continues when they return back to the courts on Saturday, March 11 and contest in their first-ever Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match in program history. USJ is set to take on conference counterpart Norwich University at 1:00 p.m. in Northfield, Vt.
