Men's Swimming & Diving Second After Opening Day of GNAC Championships

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's swimming and diving team began the 2023 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championships in record breaking fashion Friday, tallying 62 points to sit in second after the first day of action. The men were paced by graduate student Michael Allo (Newington, Conn.), who broke the program record in the 100-yard breaststroke to finish in second place. Overall, the Blue Jays brought home four medals after the opening day of the championships.

TOP PERFORMANCES 

  • 200 Yard Medley Relay – The team of Allo, seniors Aaron Gauvin (Berlin, Conn.), Maksym Ugrak (Newington, Conn.), and junior Vinnie Carbonell (Berlin, Conn.)  brought home the silver medal, finishing in second after combining for a time of 1:42.95.
  • 200 Yard Free – Gauvin finished fourth in the prelims, setting a time of 1:56.34, while classmate Tim Magill (Staten Island, N.Y.) was seeded seventh in the finals and junior Andrew Parisi (Ellington, Conn.) was seeded eighth. During the finals, all three Blue Jays would finish in the same positions that they qualified in.
  • 50 Yard Butterfly – Ugrak and Carbonell both qualified for the finals after posting times of 25.60 seconds and 26.52 seconds to be seeded fifth and eighth, respectively. In the finals, Ugrak just missed out on the podium, finishing in fourth with a time of 25.18 seconds, while Carbonell placed sixth in a time of 25.83 seconds.
  • 100 Yard Breaststroke – Allo shattered the school record during the prelims, being seeded second for the finals after posting a time of 58.96 seconds. The graduate student outdid himself in the finals, breaking the program record again to take home the silver medal after posting a new program-best time of 58.51 seconds.
  • 1000 Yard Free – Junior Joseph Guerin (Bristol, Conn.) finished in fourth place after recording a time of 11:25.79.
  • 400 Yard Free Relay – The team of Allo, Gauvin, Carbonell and Ugrak brough home the silver medal after combining for a time of 3:26.74.
  • 3 Meter Diving – Senior David Kavanaugh (West Hartford, Conn.) tallied a score of 159.05 across six dives, earning the bronze medal and All-Conference recognition.

UP NEXT
The Blue Jays continue the GNAC Championships tomorrow, Saturday, February 4. Prelims begin at 10:00 a.m. inside the Boston Sports Institute in Wellesley, Mass, with the 1-meter diving taking place at the Holmes Sports Center on the campus of Simmons University in Boston.
