
Men's Soccer Powers Past Regis, 5-0, Advances to GNAC Semifinals
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The top-seeded University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team took care of business at home, defeating ninth-seeded Regis College (Regis), 5-0, during the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon at the USJ Soccer Field in West Hartford, Conn. With the victory, the Blue Jays have now advanced to the semifinals for the fifth-straight season. With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 12-4-3 on the year, while the Pride concluded their 2024 campaign at 6-9-4 overall.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Both teams would test the opposing goalkeepers early in the match, but could not find the back of the net.
- USJ were granted a perfect opportunity to open the scoring at the 29:59 mark, as senior forward Dane Stephens (Linstead, Jamaica) was brought down inside the box, earning the Blue Jays a penalty kick. Stephens stepped up to take the spot kick, sending the Regis keeper the wrong way and establishing a 1-0 lead.
- The Blue Jays nearly doubled the scoring a minute later as junior defender Eduardo Chavez-Baez (Norwalk, Conn.) saw his strike rattle off the crossbar, but neither team would find the back of the net, as USJ held a 1-0 lead entering the halftime break.
- USJ doubled the advantage with 58:04 showing on the clock, as freshman forward Damir Cirikovic (Southington, Conn.) picked out a pass to classmate Mario Milardo (Middletown, Conn.), who rocketed the ball into the net, increasing the gap to 2-0.
- Milardo extended the lead to 3-0 at the 69:15 mark, getting on the end of a passing combination by graduate student midfielder Henry McGarrah V (Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore midfielder Nate Gabriel (Naugatuck, Conn.), before scoring his second goal of the game.
- McGarrah V would get on the scoresheet himself, finding the back of the net at the 82:46 mark, before notching his second assist of the night, dishing out a pass to Cirikovic who fired a shot into the goal at the 87:01 mark, increasing the USJ lead to 5-0.
- The Pride would not find a late consolation goal, as the Blue Jays secured a dominating 5-0 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- McGarrah V recorded his team-leading 11th goal of the season.
- Milardo recorded his first career brace.
- Freshman goalkeeper Will Slayton (Manchester, Conn.) got the start in goal, playing the opening 78 minutes, recording four saves to keep his fifth shutout of the season.
- Freshman Aidan Peterson (Cheshire, Conn.) played the remaining 12 minutes in goal, tallying one save.

The top-seeded Blue Jays continue postseason play with a semifinal matchup on Wednesday, November 6 against No. 4 Emmanuel in West Hartford. Kickoff against the Saints on the USJ Soccer Field is set for 4:00 p.m.
