Men's Soccer Held to Scoreless Draw During GNAC Opener at Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team was held to a frustrating scoreless draw during the team's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener at Rivier University (Rivier) Wednesday night on Joanne Merrill Field in Nashua, N.H. The Blue Jays dominated offensively, outshooting the Raiders, 17-4. Freshman netminder Will Slayton (Manchester, Conn.) recorded his first career shutout during the draw. With the result, the Blue Jays move to 0-3-1 on the campaign and 0-0-1 in the GNAC, while the Raiders move to 2-0-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the GNAC.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Blue Jays dominated the opening 45 minutes of the game, generating numerous scoring chances. However, the Rivier goalkeeper was in fine form on the night, denying the Blue Jays an opening goal, as the game remained scoreless.
  • Slayton came up big for the Blue Jays in the second half, denying a Rivier strike on goal at the 54:28 mark to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0.
  • USJ continued to look for a breakthrough, as senior forward Dane Stephens (Linstead, Jamaica) stepped up to take a free kick in prime scoring position, but his strike was stopped by a world-class effort from the Rivier goalkeeper, preventing the Blue Jays from taking the lead.
  • Neither team could generate a clear chance late, as the game ended scoreless, 0-0.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Slayton stopped the lone shot he faced.
  • USJ forced the Rivier goalkeeper to make six saves.
  • The Blue Jays held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • The draw maintains USJ's perfect record against Rivier, 5-0-1, but marks the first time the Blue Jays did not defeat the Raiders.
