
Men's Soccer Falls at Home to Wheaton
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team succumbed to the Wheaton College (Wheaton) Lyons, 5-1, during non-conference play Saturday afternoon on the USJ Soccer Field in West Hartford, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays move to 0-3-0 on the campaign, while the Lyons move to 3-1-0.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- The Lyons wasted little time netting the games first goal, as senior forward Alasdai Ferrier (Concord, N.H.) scored off a senior defender Ethan Alfano (East Greenwich, R.I.) assist three minutes into the game, establishing a 1-0 lead for the visitors.
- Ferrier struck again 17 minutes later, completing his brace with a solo goal at the 20:07 mark, increasing the gap to 2-0.
- The game grew quiet until the 42nd minute, as senior defender Ryan Bell (Berwyn, Pa.) recorded his first goal of the game, increasing the Lyons edge to 3-0.
- Graduate student forward Henry McGarrah V (Hartford, Conn.) answered back for the Blue Jays in the closing minute of the opening half, slotting the ball past the Wheaton goalkeeper after receiving a pass from senior forward Dane Stephens (Linstead, Jamaica) inside the 18-yard box, sending the Blue Jays into the half down, 3-1.
- Wheaton started the second half much like the first, as Bell tallied his second goal of the game at the 55:21 mark, extending the Lyons lead to 4-1.
- Bell put the final nail in the coffin at the 59:25 mark, rounding out his hattrick to send Wheaton home with a 5-1 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- McGarrah netted his second goal of the season.
- Junior Andres Diosa (Cheshire, Conn.) got the start in goal, but exited the match due to injury after the opening 3:54 minutes of play.
- Freshman Will Slayton (Manchester, Conn.) played 62:39 in net, recording five saves.
- Freshman Aidan Peterson (Cheshire, Conn.) made his collegiate debut, playing the remaining 23:27 in net, tallying two saves.
- The Lyons held a dominating 29-6 advantage in shots.
- Wheaton also held a 10-1 edge in corner kicks.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays open up Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Wednesday, September 11 at Rivier University. Opening kickoff against the Raiders at Joanne Merrill Field in Nashua, N.H., is slated for 7:00 p.m.
