Men's Soccer Tames AMCATS in Regular-Season Finale, 4-0

PAXTON, Mass. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team concluded the 2023 regular season on the road at Anna Maria College (AMC) Tuesday night, taking down the AMCATS, 4-0, during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Caparso Field in Paxton, Mass. Due to results elsewhere, the Blue Jays locked up the three-seed in the upcoming GNAC playoffs. With the result, the Blue Jays end the regular season at 12-1-3 overall and 10-1-3 in the GNAC, while the AMCATS move to 4-10-1 overall and 4-9-1 in the conference.

KEY MOMENTS

  • The game started quietly as neither team could break through the opposing defense.
  • Senior midfielder Henry McGarrah V (Hartford, Conn.) would change the game, collecting the ball at the top of the box, before fighting his way past a crowd of AMCATS, firing a shot into the bottom corner to establish a 1-0 USJ edge at the 10:37 mark.
  • AMC looked to quickly equalize, generating two scoring chances, but senior goalkeeper Jose Miguel Garcia Martin (Madrid, Spain) came up big, making a pair of stops to preserve the lead.
  • Both teams would trade chances late in the first half, but neither side would find the back of the net, allowing USJ to enter the halftime break leading, 1-0.
  • AMC would look to find the equalizer early in the first half, forcing Garcia Martin to make another pair of saves, before receiving a golden opportunity from a penalty kick at the 50:03 mark.
  • Mark Cavallaro would step up for the AMCATS, but Garcia Martin dove down to his left, guessing the right way and stopping the kick.
  • The Blue Jays rewarded their goalkeeper at the 60:38 mark as graduate student midfielder Nolan Clack (Hanson, Mass.) found himself wide open on the left flank, receiving the ball before faking out a defender and slotting the ball into the back of the net, increasing the USJ lead to 2-0.
  • McGarrah V soon made it 3-0, securing his brace after sophomore midfielder Jason Moleiro picked out a pass to McGarrah V, who fired his shot into the net at the 66:21 mark.
  • AMC tried to get on the scoreboard moments later, but junior goalkeeper El Hadji Anne (Bronx, N.Y.), who entered the match in the 61st minute, denied the AMCATS, keeping the score at 3-0 entering the 75th minute.
  • Moleiro would turn provider again, picking out a streaking freshman midfielder Jovany Montano (New Cannan, Conn.) up the middle of the field before firing his shot past the outrushing keeper, increasing the lead to 4-0 at the 78:22 mark.
  • The lead would prove too much to overcome as USJ would secure the victory, 4-0.
