Anderson Nets Four, Men's Soccer Downs Dean Saturday, 4-1

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.  The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team pulled away late from the Bulldogs of Dean College, taking a 4-1 decision in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on a sunny, then downpour rainy, then sunny Saturday afternoon on the USJ Soccer Field.

Senior forward DeAnte Anderson (Bloomfield, Conn.) continued his scorching-hot start to the 2021 season, scoring all four goals for the Blue Jays, and has scored the last nine for USJ dating back to September 7 when the Blue Jays defeated cross-town rival Trinity College, 5-3. Junior midfielder Juan Torres (Hartford, Conn.) added two assists, while junior midfielder Joel Agbetossou (Hartford, Conn.) also had a helper Saturday versus the Bulldogs.

USJ scored the first two goals of the game, and maintained that lead throughout until putting two more past the goalkeeper in a seven-minute span near the end of the match.

PLAYER QUOTE [DeAnte Anderson] "The weather conditions were tough, but my teammates found a way to grind it out. It was a tough game. Dean is a good opponent, we knew it would be a challenge, but I am happy to get the result. It all starts with practice. We go in with the mentality of how we want to play. The linkup is superb [with Juan Torres and Joel Agbetossou]. My teammates found me at the right time and in the right spots. They made my job easy."

COACH QUOTE
[Paul Wright]
"It was a game where we were dominant and created a lot of opportunities [referring to the draw last time out against UMass-Dartmouth]. I was confident that if we could do the same today against Dean, we would take them, and I think we did a lot of creating. We could've taken a few more to make the game a little less emotional, but at the end of the day we got just the result we were looking for…four goals, another great performance by DeAnte [Anderson], and a good solid team effort."

GAME NOTES

  • Both teams were treated to a sizeable downpour for a 20-minute stretch at the end of the first half. The Bulldogs got their one and only goal on a penalty kick in the rain after a handball inside the penalty area.
  • Anderson's nine goals is the most by any player in program history in a four-game stretch.
  • First two assists of Juan Torres' career, and his first multi-assist game.
  • The first goal snapped a 208-minute dry spell for the Blue Jays. They had not scored since Anderson's 'full house' on September 7.
  • USJ held a sizeable shots advantage, 26-5.
