MEDFORD, Mass. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team fell for the first time during the 2019 campaign, dropping a 1-0 decision on the road to the Fisher College Falcons Wednesday night at Hormel Stadium. With the setback, the Blue Jays dip to 2-1-0 on the season, while the Falcons improve to 4-2-0.
The Blue Jays appeared to control the pace of the game throughout, with a clear advantage in shots on goal (7-2), and corner kicks (11-2), but were unable to cash in. Saint Joseph earned three corner kicks in the first 10 minutes, but did not get a shot on goal.
After a save by Fisher's sophomore goalkeeper Christopher Garcia (Rowland Heights, Calif.) in the 36th minute, three more corner kicks in less than three minutes were also unsuccessful for the Blue Jays, as the Falcons continued to do all they could defensively to stop them.
The Falcons had their best opportunity of the half on a header from senior captain Steven Jagba (Boston, Mass.), but senior Joseph Boland (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) made a critical save for the Blue Jays.
After a quiet first ten minutes of half number two, the Falcons appeared to gain some momentum after that scoreless first half, punching home the game's first goal in the 56th minute. Sophomore Joel Bailey (Derrider, La.) found Andree Molina (El Paso, Texas), who blasted it past Boland to take a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Jays were eager to tie it up quickly, outshooting the Falcons 6-1 in the second half, but Garcia remained tough with four second-half saves in goal, preventing any chance of extra time.
