
Men's Lacrosse Tripped Up at Clark, 13-8, Saturday Afternoon
WORCESTER, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference road game to Clark University (Clark), 13-8, Saturday afternoon at Granger Field in Worcester, Mass. WIth the result, the Blue Jays moved to 2-2 on the season, while the Cougars improved to 3-1.
KEY MOMENTS
- Clark dominated the opening quarter, keeping USJ off the scoreboard as they held a 4-0 edge entering the second.
- The Cougars continued their hot start, extending the gap to 5-0 at the 13:34 mark.
- Graduate student attack Evan Baden (Burlington, Conn.) put an end to the run, scoring a man-down goal with 12:42 on the clock, cutting the deficit to 5-1.
- However, Clark answered right back, before Baden netted his second of the game at the 9:18 mark, keeping the Blue Jays within four, 6-2.
- The Cougars took advantage of a man-up situation to close out the half, scoring with 48 seconds on the clock and holding a 7-2 edge at halftime.
- Clark came out strong, blanking USJ again as they extended the lead to eight, 10-2, after three quarters.
- USJ would begin to mount a comeb-back, as graduate student midfielder Aidan D'Amato (Tolland, Conn.) rifled back-to-back goals, closing teh gap to 10-4 with 12:08 left to play.
- Clark answered back with two goals, reextendign the lead to 12-4 att he 7:55 mark.
- The Blue Jays continued to fight as sophomore attack Matthew Wurszt (Wilbraham, Mass.) and graduate student attack Ryan Paltauf (Southbury, Conn.) both found the back of the net, cutting the deficit back to six, 12-6, with 3:46 remaining.
- However, the Cougars would score again, holding a 13-6 edge at the 2:05 mark.
- Baden and D'Amato would round out their hattricks late for USJ, but the deficit ultimately proved too much to overcome, as Clark secured the win, 13-8.
NOTES
- D'Amato paced the team with four points off three goals and one assist.
- Baden netted his second hattrick in as many games.
- D'Amato continue his hattrick streak, securing his fourth consecutive hattrick.
- Senior midfielder Luke von Borstel (Massenna, N.Y.) tallied a team-high seven ground balls.
- Von Borstel also paced the team at the faceoff "X", posting a 7-for-16 mark.
- Graduate student Trey McCann (Simsbury, Conn.) played all 60 minutes in net, tallying 14 saves.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays return home for a three-game homestand, starting with a matchup against Wheaton College on Saturday, march 8. Opening faceoff against the Lyons at the USJ Lacrosse Field in West Hartford, Conn., is set for noon.
