Men's Lacrosse To Host SUNY Poly In NCAA Tournament First Round

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's lacrosse team, which captured its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship in program history this past Saturday afternoon, was selected to host SUNY Poly in the First Round of the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament in West Hartford, Conn. The Blue Jays looked on in anticipation during the squad's viewing party, as each of the 38 teams in the bracket were revealed Sunday night in a live selection show on www.NCAA.com

THE COMPETITION

The first round matchup features two conference champions. USJ claimed its first GNAC title while SUNY Poly upset top-seed Maine Maritime in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship on Sunday, picking up the programs' second conference championship.

SUNY POLY

The Wildcats (11-5) captured their second NAC Championship Sunday afternoon, defeating perennial powers Maine Maritime, 18-8. SUNY Poly were the third-seed entering the NAC Tournament, defeating SUNY Morrisville in the semifinal before defeating the Mariners in the championship game. The Wildcats will be making their first apperance in the NCAA Tournament since 2021.

USJ

The Blue Jays (16-3) won their first GNAC Championship this past Saturday afternoon, taking down Dean, 13-12. It marks the first conference championship for the Blue Jays in four full seasons (2020 was shortended due to COVID-19 pandemic) in the program's brief history since USJ became a fully coeducational institution in the fall of 2018. It also marked the 12th overall GNAC title in USJ school history across all sports. The Blue Jays will be making their debut appearance in the NCAA Tournament appearance, taking on SUNY Poly in the first round.

THE TOURNAMENT

All tournament games leading up to the national championship will be played on the campuses of the competing institutions. Six sites will host first-round competition on May 8. 

First-round winners will advance to one of eight sites for the second and third rounds on May 11-12. Winners of the third round matchups will advance to the quarerfinals will advance to the national semifinals, which take place on May 19. The national championship game will be played May 26 at Lincoln Finacial Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
