Men's Lacrosse Drops Regular Season Finale At JWU, 11-4

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's lacrosse team fell behind early and could not recover in an 11-4 setback to the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University (JWU), 11-4, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) road match and regular-season finale, held under the lights on the SMAC Wednesday. Despite the loss, the Blue Jays had already clinched playoff berth for the second straight season, and will face the No. 2 Lasell Lasers in the GNAC Quarterfinals, set for this Saturday, April 30 at 2:00 p.m. in Newton, Mass.

The Blue Jays were led by junior middie Noah Mocksfield (Colchester, Conn.) who had two of the four scores on the night. Junior attackman Anthony Lupo (Wallingford, Conn.) and Junior midfielder Evan Baden (Burlington, Conn.) also scored for USJ. Freshman midfielder Donny McInnis (New Haven, Conn.) was the high-man for the Wildcats with a game-best three goals.

The Blue Jays kept it close in the first quarter trailing just 2-1 after a goal from Mocksfield at the 2:00 mark. After getting behind in the second quarter, the Blue Jays scored two of three goals in the third to keep it close, down three entering the fourth. It was all JWU from there though, as the Wildcats ended up scoring six unanswered to pull away for good.

GOALIE BREAKDOWN

USJ – Junior goalkeeper and captain Trey McCann (Simsbury, Conn.), fell to 6-8 and had a season-high 18 saves, allowing 11 goals in a full 60 minutes in the cage.

JWU – Goalie duties were split for the Wildcats with Trent Madigan and Chris April combining for 10 saves and four goals allowed in an even 30-minute split between the pipes. Madigan got the win and improved to 5-4 on the year.

BATTLE AT THE 'X'

Faceoffs were in favor of the hosts, as JWU held a 12-7 advantage overall. Freshman faceoff Luke von Borstel (Massena, N.Y.) was the high-man for Saint Joseph with six of 13 successful faceoffs.

UP NEXT
It's playoff time for men's lacrosse, which earned the seven seed in the upcoming GNAC Tournament. The quarterfinals kick off this weekend, with USJ taking on Lasell, the two seed, on Saturday, April 30 at 2:00 p.m. The Blue Jays are seeking their first playoff win in program history. Lasell defeated USJ 6-3 on March 19 on the USJ Lacrosse Field.
