Huge Third Period Propels Men's Lacrosse Past Pride, 18-3

WESTON, Mass. – Behind a 13-goal third period, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's lacrosse team steamrolled its way to an 18-3 win on the road Wednesday afternoon against the Pride of Regis College (REG), in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest at Regis Stadium.

The Blue Jays were led by junior midfielder Noah Mocksfield (Colchester, Conn.) who bounced back with a game-high eight goal performance, one shy of tyingq2ww his career-high. Mocksfield had scored only two goals over his previous two games. Sophomore attackman Ryan Paltauf (Southbury, Conn.) had a season-high eight assists and nine points overall. It's the second-most assists he's ever had in a game (10). Freshman attack Evan Zimnoch (Southington, Conn.) added three goals, a career-high (had just five career goals entering Saturday). Junior attack Ryan Richardson (Corona, Calif.) led Regis with two goals.

Regis scored all three of its goals in the first half, keeping the game competitive through the first two quarters as Saint Joseph led 5-3 at halftime. The Blue Jay offense exploded in the third quarter, taking advantage of a non-releasable Regis penalty which allowed them to score four times in quick succession with the extra-man advantage. USJ scored a total of 13 times in the third period (six goals from Mocksfield). Regis would lock down on defense in the fourth quarter, allowing zero goals in the period, but the Pride could not put the ball in the net as Saint Joseph prevailed.

GOALIE BREAKDOWN

USJ – Junior goalie and captain Trey McCann (Simsbury, Conn.) picked up the win (3-4), allowing three goals and making one save in 30 minutes of action. Graduate student stopper Joseph Varagnolo (Centereach, N.Y.) and freshman goalkeeper Nick Schilling (Brookfield, Conn.) split the duties in the second half for the visitors.

REG – Freshman goalkeeper Robby Fuller (Wolfeboro, N.H.) recorded a career-high 20 saves as USJ held offensive possession for the majority of the match. He took the loss (0-2) allowing 18 goals on the day.

BATTLE AT THE 'X'

Faceoffs were dominated by USJ, 20-4. Freshman faceoff Luke von Borstel (Massena, N.Y.) led the way on a perfect 8-for-8 at the X.

UP NEXT
The Blue Jays conclude a three-game road stand with a visit to intrastate non-conference foe Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday, March 29 at 7:00 p.m. It marks the final non-conference match of 2022 for the men's lacrosse program.
