Men's Hoops Drops GNAC Road Game at Albertus Magnus Saturday, 76-62

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's basketball team saw its 71-game Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular-season winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon, falling on the road to rival Albertus Magnus College (Albertus), 76-62, inside the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center in New Haven, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays moved to 15-6 on the season and 9-1 in conference play, while the Falcons moved to 13-9 overall and 9-2 in the GNAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons took the early lead, holding a 7-3 edge at the 15:18 mark of the opening half.
  • USJ responded with an 8-3 stretch, fueled by back-to-back three-pointers from senior guard Kevin Cummings (Portsmouth, N.H.), to take a 13-11 lead with 12:14 on the first-half clock.
  • Albertus fired back, using a 9-2 run to retake the lead, 20-16, at the 7:11 mark.
  • The Blue Jays continued to struggle shooting the ball the rest of the half, as the Falcons held a 28-19 lead at the break.
  • The two sides traded buckets to open the second stanza, as junior guard Lence Altenor (Everett, Mass.) drained a put-back layup, cutting the disadvantage to 38-27 at the 15:43 mark.
  • Cummings closed the gap to seven, 45-38, after a triple at the 12:16 mark, but Albertus answered with a 9-2 stretch, to increase the deficit to 14, 54-40, and force a USJ timeout with 9:52 left to play.
  • USJ would be able to close the gap back to single digits, as a 6-2 run, capped off by two free throws from freshman forward Adelphe Cisse (Pointe-Noire, Congo), saw the visitors trail, 66-57, with 2:33 on the clock.
  • However, the Falcons would not let USJ get any closer, as the hosts secured the victory, 76-62.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Cummings paced the team with 14 points.
  • Junior forward Friedrich Feldrappe (Berlin, Germany) notched a double-double, scoring 12 points while hauling in 13 rebounds.
  • USJ and Albertus were deadlocked in rebounds, as both teams grabbed 39 boards.
  • Turnovers proved costly for USJ, as Albertus scored 18 points off of 20 Blue Jays' turnovers.
  • The 71-game regular-season conference winning streak was the longest in the country.
