
Men's Hoops Dominates Emmanuel, 93-53, Tuesday Night
BOSTON – Junior guard Lence Altenor (Everett, Mass.) tied his career-high of 24 points to power the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's basketball team past Emmanuel College (EC), 93-53, during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Tuesday night inside the Jean Yawkey Center in Boston, Mass. With the result, the Blue Jays improve to 12-5 on the season and 6-0 in GNAC play while the Saints fall to 2-14 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- USJ jumped out to an early lead, as back-to-back three pointers from junior forward Friedrich Feldrappe (Berlin, Germany) and senior wing Kevin Cummings (Portsmouth, N.H. saw the Blue Jays take a 6-0 lead after the opening minute.
- EC would fight back within one, but an 11-4 run, fueled by four points from freshman guard Jakari Tertulien (Brigeport, Conn.) broke open an eight-point lead, 19-11, for USJ at the 10:58 mark.
- USJ began to pull away, utilizing a 7-0 stretch, capped off by an easy layup from sophomore forward Jalen Holmes (Cherry Hill, N.J.), to establish a double-digit advantage, 22-11, with 10:30 left in the half.
- The Blue Jays continued to control the game on both ends of the court, as Altenor scored nine points in five minutes to extend USJ's lead to 21, 39-18, with 5:14 on the clock.
- USJ kept their foot on the gas to close out the half, extending the gap to 51-24 entering the halftime break.
- EC would open the second half on a 10-6 stretch, closing the gap to 57-34 before calling a timeout at the 15:52 mark.
- The Saints would cut the deficit to 18, but back-to-back buckets from Cummings, featuring a fast break dunk, saw the Blue Jays hold a 61-39 lead with 13:21 left to play.
- USJ would re-find its rhythm, as Holmes muscled off his defender before sinking an easy layup, establishing a 77-46 edge with 6:02 left to play.
- The Blue Jays never looked back as they remained in control for the remainder of the game, taking home a 93-53 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Altneor tied his career-high with a team-best 24 points.
- Sophomore center Tony Acevedo (San Fernando Valley, Calif.) hauled in a team-high seven rebounds.
- Tertulien dished out a team-best six assists.
- USJ outshot EC, 54.7 percent (35-of-64) to 33.3 percent (20-of-60).
- The Blue Jays held a significant edge in rebounding, 44-27.
- USJ dominated inside, scoring 42 points inside the paint, compared to EC's 22.
- The 40-point victory is the largest margin of victory for the Blue Jays this season.
- With the win, USJ extended its GNAC regular season winning streak to 68 games.
