
Men's Basketball Falls on the Road at No. 3 Trinity Monday Night
HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's basketball team fell to crosstown foe and nationally-ranked No. 3 Trinity College (Trinity), 86-60, Monday night inside Ray Oosting Gymnasium in Hartford, Conn. Junior guard Lence Altenor (Everett, Mass.) paced the Blue Jays offensively, dropping a team-high 15 points. With the result, the Blue Jays dropped to 5-3 overall on the season, while the Bantams improved to 9-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a back-and-forth opening six minutes of the contest, junior forward Friedrich Feldrappe (Berlin, Germany) scored seven unanswered points to establish a 14-8 USJ lead with 13:22 left in the first half.
- Trinity responded with a 9-2 stretch, retaking the advantage 17-16 at the 10-minute mark.
- The Bantams then put on the clamps, limiting the USJ offense, as the hosts extended the gap to eight, 24-16, with 6:46 left on the first-half clock.
- Altenor put an end to the scoring drought with a pair of free throws, but Trinity would increase the USJ deficit to double-digits, 33-18, with 4:53 to go in the opening half.
- Senior guard Kevin Cummings (Portsmouth, N.H.) trimmed the gap to 11, 35-24, with a mid-range jumper from the left wing, but the Bantams closed the half on a 7-2 stretch, taking a 42-26 lead into the halftime break.
- USJ opened the second half on a 6-2 scoring stretch, capped off by a jumper from junior guard Tyshawn Jackson (Hartford, Conn.), closing the gap to 12, 44-32, at the 16:49 mark.
- However, after the two sides traded buckets, Trinity erupted offensively for an 11-3 run, increasing the advantage to 21 points, 63-42, and forced the Blue Jays to call a timeout with 10:27 left to play.
- The Blue Jays would not be able to close the gap, as the Bantams secured an 86-60 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Altenor lead the team with 15 points, shooting a perfect 9-of-9 from the free-throw line.
- Feldrappe and Cummings joined him in double figures, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively.
- Feldrappe paced the Blue Jays on the glass, hauling in six rebounds.
- Senior guard Tahmeen Dupree (Brooklyn, N.Y.) dished out a team-best four assists.
- Trinity dominated on the boards, outrebounding USJ, 48-22.
- The Bantams hauled in 22 offensive rebounds, scoring 22 points off their second opportunities.
