No. 13 Men's Basketball Tops Yeshiva in Season Opener, 69-60

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The No. 13 University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's basketball team topped the visiting Yeshiva University Maccabees, 69-60, at home in its 2022-23 season opener Wednesday night inside James A. Calhoun Gymnasium in West Hartford. The Blue Jays used a surge at the end of the first half to take their first lead with just under two minutes before the break, and they would never trail again en route to the season-opening triumph.

USJ's tenacious defense was the difference-maker in the victory, piling pressure on Yeshiva all game long. The Blue Jays forced 21 Maccabees' turnovers in the contest and turned those turnovers into 31 USJ points. 11 of the 21 Yeshiva turnovers came via USJ steals, resulting often times in easy transition buckets for the Blue Jays, who held a sizeable advantages in fast-break points, 20-6, and points in the paint, 36-20.

Four Blue Jays scored in double figures on the night led by graduate student guard Ryan O'Neill (Litchfield, Conn.), who finished with a game-high 18 points. Senior guard Tyree Mitchell (East Hartford, Conn.) added 14, while senior guard Jaecee Martin (Hartford, Conn.) and senior forward Jalen Samuels (Franklin, Mass.) chipped in with 12 points apiece.
