Men's Basketball Unbeaten Streak Ends At Yeshiva Thursday, 87-76

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The unbeaten streak is over for the nationally-ranked No.5 University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's basketball team, which dropped a highly-anticipated top 25 matchup to No. 24 Yeshiva University (YU), 87-76, on the road Thursday night in the Max Stern Athletic Center. With the loss, the Blue Jays streak ends as follows:

  • 22 straight wins to start a season (tied for longest win streak across all NCAA Divisions this season and program record for single season and to start a season)
  • 24 straight wins across multiple seasons (longest such streak across all NCAA Divisions this season and program record)
  • Second-to-last unbeaten team in the nation (Nova Southeastern – Div. II)

Senior guard Jaecee Martin (Hartford, Conn.) led the way for the Blue Jays with 20 points (8-21 FG) and a game-high eight assists. Three other Blue Jays reached double-figures, including senior forward Jordan Powell (Middletown, Conn.), who added 13 points (7-10 FG), four rebounds and two blocked shots. For the Maccabees it was the nation's leading scorer who once again led the way, as senior guard and captain Ryan Turell (Los Angeles, Calif.) poured in 22 points despite being held to 8-of-19 from the field (42.1%), his second-worst field-goal percentage in a game this season. He also had seven assists. Three-point shooting was the name of the game, as senior guard and captain Eitan Halpert (Los Angeles, Calif.) connected on seven of his 10 threes to score a game-high 23 points.

Yeshiva shot 12-of-24 from downtown (50%), its sixth game making at least a dozen long balls. The Maccabees are 6-0 in those games. For the Blue Jays, they shot just 2-of-9 from deep (22%) but shot well from the line (12-15 FT). USJ seemed to do everything right, committing just six turnovers, the fewest in a game in program history. Saint Joseph also controlled several other statistical categories, and led by five at the half, but the Maccabees came out on fire and quickly took control of the game. With the action back-and-forth throughout the second half, the game very much could have gone either way, but a late run including a series of threes propelled the hosts to their first win over a top 25 school in program history.
