Martin Wins Sixth GNAC Rookie Of The Week Award

WINTHROP, Mass. - For the sixth time this season, freshman guard Taelon Martin (Springfield, Mass.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's basketball team was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week, announced Monday by conference officials. It marks the sixth time in eight weeks that Martin has garnered GNAC Rookie of the Week honors. No other rookie was won it more than twice.

Martin had another impressive week as the Blue Jays went 2-0 once again, running their winning streak to 22 straight, and completing an undefeated GNAC campaign, going a perfect 11-0 in league play. USJ became the second program in GNAC men's basketball history to run the table against conference opponents (Albertus Magnus 2012, 2015).

In a pair of home GNAC victories, Martin averaged 15.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, connecting on nearly 55% (12-22) of his attempts from the field, and was perfect from the foul line (4-4). Martin opened the week with 15 points (6-11 FG) and six rebounds on Tuesday evening in a 96-81 victory over Anna Maria, before going for 15 points (6-11 FG) and four boards in a 93-76 triumph of Colby-Sawyer on Saturday. Oh, and he gave the O'Connell Center crowd a few more reasons to shout, throwing down a series of emphatic slams yet again, something he has been known to do throughout his rookie season. Martin is a solid fourth on the team in scoring at better than 11 points per game, and third in rebounding at more than four boards per contest.
