Martin Garners Fifth GNAC Rookie of the Week Award

WINTHROP, Mass. - For the fifth time this season, freshman guard Taelon Martin (Springfield, Mass.) of the University of Saint Joseph men's basketball team was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week, announced Monday afternoon by the conference front office. It marks the fifth time spanning the past seven weeks this season that Martin has garnered GNAC Rookie of the Week honors.

Martin had one of his most consistent weeks of the season, helping lead the Blue Jays (19-2, 7-0 GNAC) to another 2-0 week and run their winning streak to 18-straight games after picking up a pair of GNAC wins. The Springfield product averaged 16.0 points and 3.0 rebounds in 19.0 minutes per game off the bench. The 6-5 guard was stellar shooting the rock on the week, connecting on 13-of-20 (65.0%) attempts from the floor, including 6-of-9 (66.7%) from beyond the arc.

Martin opened the week with 19 points (8-13 FG, 3-5 3FG) and four rebounds on Tuesday night in a 94-57 triumph at Lasell before going for 13 points (5-7 FG, 3-4 3FG) and two rebounds on Saturday at home in a 113-73 route of Saint Joseph's (Me.). Through 21 games this season, Martin is one of five Blue Jays averaging double figures at 10.9 points per game. He is sixth on the team in rebounding with 3.6 boards per game. Additionally, he also logs 1.5 steals per game which ranks second for the Blue Jays.

The USJ men's basketball team will have its final two-game road trip of the season this week before returning home for the last two regular-season games of 2019-2020 next week. USJ plays at Regis next on Wednesday, February 12 at 6:00 p.m.
