Martin Earns Third Straight GNAC Rookie of the Week Award

WINTHROP, Mass. - For the third straight week, freshman Taelon Martin (Springfield, Mass.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's basketball team was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference front office on Monday afternoon. It marks back-to-back-to-back weeks Martin has earned GNAC Rookie of the Week honors and his fourth career nod, garnering the accolade four times over the past five weeks.

Martin continued to impress during his rookie campaign, helping lead the Blue Jays to a 2-0 week and run their winning streak to 14 straight games after picking up a pair of GNAC wins. The Springfield product averaged 12.5 points and 2.5 steals in 15.5 minutes of floor time per contest off the bench over the two-game span. The 6-5 guard was stellar shooting the rock on the week, connecting on 12-of-15 (80.0%) attempts from the floor, including five thunderous dunks.

Martin opened the week with eight points (4-4 FG) and a steal on Tuesday in a 99-83 triumph over Suffolk inside the O'Connell Center before exploding for 17 points and four steals on Saturday in a 101-66 rout of Rivier at home.

Through the first 17 games this season, Martin is one of five Blue Jays averaging double figures at 10.7 points per game. He is sixth on the team in rebounding with 3.6 boards per game. Additionally, he also logs 1.6 steals per game which ranks second for the Blue Jays.

The USJ men's basketball team returns to the hardwood on Wednesday night in a highly anticipated matchup at intrastate and GNAC rival No. 19 Albertus Magnus. Tip-off between the Blue Jays and Falcons is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. inside "The Nest" at the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center.
