Martin Repeats As GNAC Rookie of the Week Winner

WINTHROP, Mass. - Freshman Taelon Martin (Springfield, Mass.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's basketball team was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference front office on Monday afternoon. It marks back-to-back weeks Martin has earned GNAC Rookie of the Week honors and his third career nod, garnering the accolade three times over the past four weeks.

Martin helped power the Blue Jays to a 2-0 week as USJ picked up a win over perennial NESCAC power Williams and a triumph in their GNAC opener on the road at Norwich. The Springfield product averaged 11.5 points and 2.0 rebounds in 26.5 minutes per game on the week. The high-flying rookie connected on 6-of-14 (42.9%) of his attempts from the field and was 11-of-13 (84.6%) from the charity stripe.

On Tuesday night in a thrilling 85-79 win inside the O'Connell Center over Williams, Martin finished with nine points and four rebounds. He followed that up by pouring in 14 points on Saturday in an 89-81 triumph at Norwich in their GNAC opener. The Blue Jays are now 13-2 on the season and winners of 12 straight.

Through the first 15 games this season, Martin is one of five Blue Jays averaging double figures at 10.4 points per game. He is sixth on the team in rebounding with 3.9 boards per game. Additionally, he also logs 1.5 steals per game which ranks second for the Blue Jays.
