Childs Picks Up Second GNAC Rookie of the Week Award

WINTHROP, Mass. - Freshman Chris Childs (Bronx, N.Y.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's basketball team picked up his second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week award of the season, it was announced on Monday afternoon by the league's front office. Childs was previously named GNAC Rookie of the Week following the second week of the 2018-19 basketball season before earning the award this week. It marks the ninth time this year a member of the USJ men's basketball team has earned the GNAC Rookie of the Week award through the first twelve weeks of the season.

Childs had a huge week for the Blue Jays averaging 27.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game in a 1-1 GNAC week. The rookie sharpshooter hit for 50.0% (16-32) from the field, including a staggering 64.7% (11-17) from beyond the arc. He also connected for 91.7% (11-12) from the charity stripe on the week. Trailing by eight with under four minutes to play versus Johnson & Wales (JWU) on Thursday night, Childs rattled off four threes to help get USJ right back in it in a contest that featured two buzzer beaters and two overtimes. Childs finished with 22 points (7-15 FG, 5-8 3FG, 3-4 FT) against the Wildcats, with 15 of them coming in the final four minutes and overtime.

The Bronx, N.Y. native followed that up with a career-high 32 points in a 78-73 road win at Anna Maria on Saturday. He remained unconscious shooting from the floor (9-17 FG, 6-9 3FG, 8-8 FT) to help springboard the Blue Jays in a must-win game over the AMCATS. Childs now ranks second in the GNAC shooting 49.3% on the season from beyond the arc.

Childs and USJ will be back in action on Tuesday, February 5, in a huge home matchup with GNAC and intrastate foe Albertus Magnus. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m. inside the O'Connell Center.
