
Field Hockey Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to Plymouth State Wednesday Night
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) field hockey team dropped an overtime heartbreak to Plymouth State University, 4-3, Wednesday night on the USJ Field Hockey Field in West Hartford, Conn. WIth the result, the Blue Jays drop to 1-2 on the season, while the Panthers improve to 2-0.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- The Blue Jays wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, netting the game's opening goal just 5:31 into the first quarter. Freshman Kaitlin Trudeau (Bernardston, Mass.) picked out a perfect pass to junior midfielder Ariana Komonaj (Thomaston, Conn.), who ripped her shot into the goal, establishing a 1-0 USJ lead.
- Plymouth State would equalize late into the quarter, scoring at the 10:54 mark to level the game at 1-1 entering the second quarter.
- USJ would test the Panthers netminder early in the second, but were denied by numerous saves to keep the game tied at 1-1 entering the third quarter.
- The Blue Jays nearly broke the deadlock at the 35:14 mark in the third quarter, as junior forward Aurelia Barker (Thomaston, Conn.) saw her shot rattle off the post.
- Plymouth State would start to take control of the game, but senior goalkeeper Abby Delgado (Southington, Conn.) came up big, tallying five saves in the closing minutes of the quarter, to keep the score at 1-1 entering the fourth.
- USJ would break the deadlock early in the fourth quarter, as Trudeau notched her second assist of the game, picking out classmate Grace Kociszewski (Thomaston, Conn.), who fired her shot into the net, establishing a 2-1 edge at the 47:34 mark.
- However, the Panthers would level the score a minute and a half later, as the visitors tied the game at 2-2 at the 49:19 mark, before taking the lead, 3-2, with a goal at the 51:06 mark.
- The Blue Jays would find a late leveler, as Trudeau and Kociszewski linked up for a clutch goal, tying the game at 3-3 with less then three minutes to play.
- Neither team would be able to find a winner in regulation, as the game entered overtime.
- Plymouth State controled the majority of the overtime period, finding hte back of the net five minutes into the extra frame to steal the victory, 4-3.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Trudeau paced the team with three assists.
- Kociszewski notched her first and second career goals.
- The Panthers held a 28-15 edge in shots, and a 18-13 advantage in shots on goal.
- Plymouth State generated 14 penalty corner opportunities compared to three for USJ.
- Delgado made her second consecutive start, playing the full 60 minutes and making 13 saves.
