Anna Maria Pulls Away Late, Beats Blue Jays, 7-1

PAXTON, Mass.  The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Field Hockey team lost a 7-1 contest to Anna Maria College (AMC) in its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match in program history Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Jays kept it close early, trailing 3-0 at the half. Junior midfielder Mackenzie Dinger (Hingham, Mass.) gave USJ a lift with a goal in the third to keep the visitors in striking distance, but the AMCATS poured it on in the final stanza, scoring four goals to pull away for good.

GAME NOTES

  • Dinger is the third Blue Jay to score a goal this season.
  • Grad student forward Allyson Shaw (Worcester, Mass.) had a goal and three assists on the night for Anna Maria.
  • The AMCATS scored their final three goals less than six minutes apart.

NUMBER TO KNOW

29 – The Blue Jays were outshot by the AMCATS 29-5. Anna Maria also held a 15-2 penalty corners advantage.  

GOALIE BREAKDOWN

USJ
 –Freshman goalie Abby Delgado (Southington, Conn.) took the loss (1-1), allowing two goals in just under 20 minutes of play. Sophomore goalie Wendy Bowden (Old Saybrook, Conn.) took over for the final 40 minutes, allowing five goals and making seven saves.

AMC – Sophomore goalie Chloe Giordano (Revere, Mass.) saw just five minutes of game time Saturday. Junior goalkeeper Hannah Tobey (Falmouth, Mass.) picked up the win (1-3) going 54-plus minutes, allowing just the one goal, and also making a save.

UP NEXT
The Blue Jays will be back home for a non-conference matchup with Bridgewater State on Tuesday, September 14 at 3:00 p.m. on the USJ Field Hockey Field.
