Baseball Edged by Worcester State in Final Game of Regular Season Tuesday
WORCESTER, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) baseball team came up just short in a tightly contested non-conference matchup at Worcester State University (WSU), falling 2-1 Tuesday afternoon at Lyons D. Diamond.
The Blue Jays (23-16) were stymied offensively for most of the game but mounted a late rally in the eighth inning. Sophomore Lawrence Winslow (Melbourne, Fla.) came through with a clutch pinch-hit RBI single to drive in junior Dom Scalia (Northford, Conn.) who had led off the inning with a walk. Saint Joseph put runners on in eight of the nine innings but left 11 stranded and couldn't capitalize further.
Freshman Aaron LaRose (Hinesburg, Vt.) got the start on the mound for the Blue Jays and was tagged with the loss. He allowed just one unearned run over 2.0 innings of work, striking out one and giving up only one hit. Relievers Cam Zampolin (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Evan Gilgenbach (Griswold, Conn.) kept the Blue Jays within striking distance, combining for six innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts and only one walk.
At the plate, senior Ryan Shaw (Ellington, Conn.) led Saint Joseph with a 2-for-4 performance. The team finished with six hits and three walks but couldn't break through against the Worcester State (21-11) pitching staff, which recorded 11 strikeouts and held USJ without an extra-base hit.
Worcester State scored single runs in the second and fourth innings, including a solo home run from junior catcher Joe Auger (Lowell, Mass.), which proved to be the difference in the ballgame.
