USJ Athletics Holds Inaugural USJ Blue Jays Classic Golf Tournament
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Department of Athletics hosted the inaugural USJ Blue Jays Classic golf tournament, presented by Prime Materials Recovery, Inc., on Tuesday, May 21, at Tumble Brook Country Club in Bloomfield, Conn. The first-of-its-kind event featured over 200 golfers that turned out in support of all 16 intercollegiate athletic programs, with general proceeds earmarked to build much-needed seating at the USJ Athletics Complex, home of the Blue Jays' Soccer, Lacrosse, and Field Hockey programs.
Located just minutes from USJ's campus, golfers competed in the inaugural USJ Blue Jays Classic, utilizing all 229 acres of Tumble Brook's three championship courses for an 18 hole scramble format competition. The team of Tyler Olander, David Kaplan, Bobby Kaplan, and Zach Stennett won the event, shooting a team score of 60 (-12), and won by matching cards. The team of Nate Schilberg, Mark Mathiason, Bob Demers, and Mike Mathiason finished second (-12), and the team of Jim Calhoun, Glen Miller, Jeff Calhoun, and Paul Wright (-11) finished third. Also highlighting the afternoon were special contests, as players had the opportunity to win prizes during Longest Drive, Closest-To-The-Pin, and Hole-In-One challenges:
• CTP Hole #2 - Jim Fanelli (1'-10")
• CTP Hole #13 - Pat Shortell (6'-1")
• CTP Hole #20 - Bob Demers (8'-5")
• Long Drive #9 - Jake Soucier (Men) & Janice Stingle (Women)
• Long Drive #17 - Freddy Wright (Men) & Kim Crone (Women)
• Long Drive #27 - Josh Ingham (Men) & Jen Hernde (Women)
In addition to golf, the USJ Blue Jays Classic hosted the Hartford HealthCare Winner's Choice Raffle – providing golfers and non-golfers alike with the opportunity to support the Blue Jays. Congratulations to Kathi Wentz who won the grand prize.
