WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to intrastate and Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) rival Albertus Magnus College (Albertus) on Wednesday evening at the USJ Soccer Field. With the result, the Blue Jays dropped to 3-7-1 overall and 3-3-1 in GNAC play, while the Falcons ran their unbeaten streak to 11 games in a row, improving to 10-1-2 overall and 5-0-2 in the league.
After a scoreless first half, the game remained tight until the 80th minute, when Albertus' Gabby Reddy delivered the decisive strike. Tessa Lopez curled in an Albertus corner that was initially headed clear by a USJ defender, but Lopez was first to the loose ball and sent it back into the penalty area. Reddy, tight-roping the offside line, collected the pass before spinning and firing a shot into the left corner of the goal for her third marker of the season, giving the visitors a late 1-0 advantage.
The Blue Jays battled hard but were outshot 11-3 overall and 5-2 on goal. The Falcons also held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Madison Corcoran (Bristol, Conn.) made four saves to keep USJ within reach, while Albertus keeper Amy Stevens turned away two shots to secure the shutout victory.
